The Aquadolls 6/1/23 Voodoo Room
Written by Tallulah Totten
On the night of June 1, just minutes after their new album Charmed was released, The Aquadolls took the stage at the House of Blues Voodoo Room in San Diego. Kicking off the night, San Diego locals, El Ticket, took the stage to perform a groovy set. The night was followed by Spray Allen, who put on a spirited performance bursting at the seams with energy.
The Aquadolls amplified the night soon after. The band (consisting of lead singer Melissa Brooks, Bassist Keilah Nina, and Drummer Jacqueline Proctor) danced their way to the stage with the song “Barbie Girl'' by Aqua echoing throughout the venue. Throughout the night, the band played through a mix of songs from their previous three albums, accompanied by a cover of “Take Me Away” by Lash (as heard in the movie Freaky Friday) and their latest singles off Charmed “Far Far Away” and “Sneaky”. The band’s early 2000's punk rock sound perfectly translated over into their live performance and kept the energy going for the rest of their set.
Between lead-singer Brooks engaging with all members of the crowd between choruses, Proctor rhythmically making her way through every song, and Nina bridging the two together, the band brought the energy of a stadium performance to a 150 capacity room. With guitar-driven melodies, punchy drums, and playful lyrics, it was hard not to have a good time. The audience, consisting of members of all ages, seemed to agree as everyone danced their way through the whole set, matching the bustling energy of the band. The Aquadolls closed out the night by playing a song off the new album titled “Beachy”, followed by “Wander” (a song off their very first album)—reminding us just how far they’ve come and how they’ve evolved as a band.
Keep up with The Aquadolls!
